Students fill greenhouse with life

Posted on: April 10, 2020

Students from Mr. Bennett’s botany/horticulture class, along with students from Practical Assessment Exploration System (PAES), have been planting flowers, herbs, vegetables, and fruits in our greenhouse. The classes also took a field trip to Bob’s Market and Greenhouse, a wholesale nursery in Mason, WV, and bought flowers and other plants and transported them back to River High.

Mr. Bennett, Mr. Moore, and Mr. Alleman have been taking good care of the greenhouse in the students’ COVID-19 induced absence. They have been watering and fertilizing all of the plants. Mr. Bennett says, “Initially we planted with the intent of starting sales on May 1st. I am trying to figure out a way to still do sales and yet maintain social distancing. I have a few ideas…” Stay tuned to see what those ideas are!

The greenhouse includes:

  • Flowers
  • Herbs
  • Tomatoes
  • Bell peppers
  • Hot peppers
  • Cucumbers
  • Zucchini
  • Yellow squash
  • Spaghetti squash
  • Watermelons
  • Cantaloupes
