PBIS

This year, MCHS has been implementing many methods of PBIS during the 2020-2021 school year. These methods are meant to encourage better behavior while focused on engaging students and making them excited about school, their community, and being kind to one another.

The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) Initiative is a multi-tiered approach to social, emotional, and behavior support. PBIS improves social, emotional, and academic outcomes for all students, including students with disabilities and students with underrepresented groups.

We have implemented the following for our students:

  • PBIS Rewards

    • PBIS Rewards is a comprehensive program that involves giving students points based upon what school-wide expectations they meet anytime throughout the school day. Staff also can give each other points, based on the same expectations. Students and staff can then use these points to purchase various items in our school store on Fridays. With the staff rewards, the staff member entering in someone deserving of points also is prompted to state why they are giving that staff member points and it gets posted for all to see (like a wall on Facebook).

    • With PBIS Rewards, we also are able to enter in minor and major referrals electronically, allowing us to better track the data and to see what problem behaviors are the most concerning and frequent. Finally, this program also has a Tier 2 intervention for PBIS, CICO (Check-in / Check out), which we plan to start using after the holidays.

  • Holiday celebrations as a school

    • We recently had a Halloween Extravaganza, which included staff and students dressing up in costume for a contest at the end of the day. The PBIS store had extra special Halloween-themed treats and was decorated, there was a Spooky Selfie Station, QR codes were throughout the building for a scavenger hunt, students were able to Trick or Treat around the building during lunch periods, all classes had some Halloween-themed lesson plans / challenges, and the PBIS Team raffled off several prizes for students and staff.

    • We have an exciting month of December coming up, "A December to Remember", which will include various activities and prizes for students and staff. Stay tuned for highlights on this soon!

  • Student of the Month

    • All staff vote for one student from each grade level that best represents our school expectations of PRIDE (Prepared, Respect, Integrity, Determination, Effort) - these students receive a T-shirt or any other item of their choosing from the PBIS store and certificates. These are announced during the school day, pictures are taken, and they are shouted out on social media.

  • MCHS has a Facebook, a Twitter, and an Instagram account!

    • Facebook and Twitter are used the most frequently to keep our followers informed of important information coming from the school, positive quotes and challenges, shout outs for students for academic achievements, and sports. The pages also show what students are doing in their classes, highlights a new staff member weekly, and has positive gratitude posts, which come from the students, given to peers or staff.

  • At the start of the year, we highlighted an alumni video

    • The alumni had to either attend Skyvue or Monroe Central and they discussed how they are successful now, how the school prepared them, what their favorite moments were from school, and added a positive message to students for the year.

  • Video lessons on PBIS

    • Our expectations have to be taught in order to be upheld! Logan Binegar, Tanis Langsdorf, and Felicia Trentacoste put together lessons for teachers with added video examples, which included more MCHS staff to demonstrate examples and non-examples of our expectations of PRIDE.

    • After Thanksgiving break, the next lesson will be on Integrity. Social media posts and announcements will focus on that trait and teachers are encouraged to positively reinforce their students verbally and with PBIS points when they see integrity examples.

  • All students' and staff's birthdays are recognized this year

    • Students receive a shout out at school, on social media, and receive a tasty treat.

  • Cancer Gas Cards

    • A fundraiser led by the PBIS Team. Cancer Gas Cards is associated with the basketball team.

  • Free sports games

    • Last year, the PBIS Team raised enough money by donations and fundraisers to allow all students to get into their home sporting games for free. We would have done the same thing this year, but it was impossible with the COVID-19 restrictions.

The PBIS Team is composed of Joe Semple, Logan Binegar, Quinn Bender, Derik Shirley, Lisa Swords, Sunessa Tollie, and  Felicia Trentacoste, along with two student reps, Danielle Langsdorf and Jozie Zwick.

Ms. Trentacoste is the Building Lead for PBIS here at MCHS. “This is a really impactful program,” Ms. Trentacoste states. “I am thankful for the entire PBIS team, but would like to give a special shoutout to Ms. Langsdorf and Mr. Binegar, who are constantly assisting me and helping me brainstorm! I could not function without you guys!”
